What Is a Justice of the Peace?

In Arkansas, a Justice of the Peace serves as the county legislative delegate. They operate much like a city council, but for the county. Justices of the Peace approve budgets for the countywide elected officials (County Judge, Sheriff, County Assessor, etc.). Additionally, Justices of the Peace can adjust property tax millages. Finally, Justices of the Peace can create county laws. These county laws can be laws (also called ordinances) aimed at preventing certain crimes (cruelty to animals, dilapidated property or data center noise ordinances), as well as civil laws related to county roads or subdivisions.

There are 13 Justices of the Peace in Faulkner County, each representing approximately 10,000 citizens in each district. Eden's district, District 12, encompasses the communities of Wooster, Springhill, and parts of north Conway.

Faulkner County Justices of the Peace meet each 3rd Tuesday each month in the old courthouse on Locust Street. This meeting is known as the Faulkner County Quorum Court. Quorum Courts operate like city councils, but deal with county-wide issues. These meetings are open to the public and can be watched on Youtube.
